BAGHDAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and his Iraqi counterpart Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and address common regional challenges, including extremism, terrorism at a meeting in Baghdad.
The leaders also explored opportunities to deepen economic, cultural, and security cooperation.
Upon arrival at the Baghdad Palace, President Zardari was given a guard of honor and an official welcome. The meeting began with a one-on-one discussion followed by a delegation-level talk and a lunch hosted by President Rashid in honor of the visiting Pakistani delegation.
Zardari expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and described Baghdad as a historic city symbolizing civilization and resilience. He congratulated Iraq on successfully holding parliamentary elections and wished the new government success in its formation.
The Pakistani President reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Iraq’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to Iraq’s long-term stability and democratic progress.
While acknowledging the positive momentum from recent exchanges, Zardari noted that current trade levels do not reflect the true potential of the bilateral relationship. He called for increased cooperation in agriculture, defense, IT, construction, and pharmaceuticals, and stressed the need for direct banking channels and business delegations to facilitate trade.
Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to support Iraq’s reconstruction by providing skilled and semi-skilled manpower and offering expertise in fields like medical services, financial management, and digital governance. He also proposed collaboration in secure data management to enhance Iraq’s institutional capacity.
The two leaders discussed the facilitation of Pakistani pilgrims visiting Iraq, with Zardari expressing hope for the swift finalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Zaireen Management to ensure the orderly movement of pilgrims. He also called for stronger coordination to prevent illegal entry and overstays of Pakistani nationals.
Both leaders agreed to maintain close coordination at regional and multilateral forums, including the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), on issues of mutual interest. President Rashid commended Pakistan’s historical role in uniting the Muslim Ummah and its support for the Palestinian cause.
