ISLAMABAD: While floods in northeast of Bangladesh have left at least 15 people dead and properties worth billions of dollars damaged, prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday offered assistance from his country to cope with the situation.
The prime minister wrote a letter to Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government in Bangladesh, which officials said was the first communication between the two countries since student protests toppled the Sheikh Hasina government.
In the letter, PM Shehbaz expressed profound grief and shock over the loss of lives and damages to properties. He said that Pakistan shared the concerns of the people of Bangladesh in the wake of the flood devastation.
The prime minister offered his country’s assistance in providing relief to the affected people. He also offered condolences with the families of those killed in the floods.
The monsoon rains and flooding have stranded nearly three million people in Bangladesh, submerging vast areas and damaging homes and infrastructure.
Road connectivity in several regions were severed, isolating communities and hampering relief efforts, disaster management and relief officials said.
The most affected districts in Bangladesh included Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Comilla and Chittagong, where five major rivers were flowing above danger levels.
