WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s Ambassador to United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh has said his country is well-positioned and prepared to act as a “connector country” on the model of Mexico, leveraging its strategic location and growing economy.

Speaking to American policymakers, diplomats and business leaders at World Trade Center, Ambassador Sheikh emphasized that enhancing economic ties remains his top priority as Pakistan’s envoy.

He noted that the trade deficit between Pakistan and the U.S. was relatively low and can be bridged easily. Pakistan, he said, was already the largest importer of American cotton and is increasingly importing soybeans from the U.S. as well. With its strategic location, Pakistan can serve as a regional hub for commerce.

The ambassador invited U.S. investors to explore the vast economic opportunities in Pakistan, particularly in agriculture, information technology (IT), and mineral resources. He highlighted that the IT sector in Pakistan offers high-quality services at up to 70% lower costs compared to the U.S.

Ambassador Sheikh underscored the Pakistani government’s efforts to simplify procedures for investors and create a business-friendly environment. He pointed to the long-standing success of over 80 American companies operating in Pakistan, as evidence of the country’s profitable and growing market.

He also emphasized Pakistan’s large population of 250 million and its strategic regional access as a compelling case for investment.

Addressing recent tensions with India, Ambassador Sheikh remarked that Indian aggression came at a time when Pakistan was singularly focused on economic growth. He said the nation is proud of its effective response, but reiterated that peace remains Pakistan’s top priority, as it is essential for sustained economic development.
