UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has reiterated its firm support for ending the decades-long economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly debate on the agenda item titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed Islamabad’s solidarity with the Cuban government and people.

Ambassador Ahmad said Pakistan’s position is guided by its “longstanding and unwavering commitment to multilateralism,” grounded in the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereign equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

He noted that unilateral economic measures run counter to these principles and violate international law, including humanitarian and human rights obligations.

He expressed concern over the humanitarian and developmental impact of the embargo, citing the findings of the UN Secretary-General’s report, which outlines how the embargo has constrained Cuba’s ability to trade, attract investment, and import essential goods such as food, medicine, and technology.

“These actions,” the Ambassador stated, “run counter to the letter and spirit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

Pakistan reaffirmed its support for draft resolution A/80/L.6, calling for an end to the embargo. Ambassador Ahmad said the annual adoption of this resolution by an overwhelming majority of UN member states reflects the will of the international community and underscores the need for a change in approach.

“Ending the embargo,” he concluded, “is a necessary step towards enabling the Cuban people to realize their right to development and prosperity.”
