UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has reaffirmed its strong support for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and called for immediate de-escalation in the Middle East, during a United Nations Security Council meeting on cooperation between the UN and GCC.

Speaking at the session, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations is essential for maintaining international peace and security. He highlighted the importance of partnerships under Chapter VIII of the UN Charter, noting that regional organizations play a vital role in conflict prevention, mediation, and resolution.

The ambassador described enhanced cooperation between the UN and GCC as a “strategic necessity,” particularly in addressing key regional challenges in Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon. He praised the GCC’s proactive role in promoting peace, diplomacy, humanitarian efforts, and development cooperation, calling it a “pivotal pillar of regional stability.”

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar reaffirmed Pakistan’s close and brotherly relations with GCC countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. He noted that these ties are rooted in shared values and strengthened by strong economic, political, and people-to-people connections.

Condemning recent attacks on Gulf countries targeting civilians and infrastructure, Pakistan expressed full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of GCC states. The envoy called for an immediate halt to such attacks and stressed the importance of safeguarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

He also voiced concern over the broader regional situation, particularly the escalation following attacks against Iran, warning that rising tensions pose serious risks to global peace, security, and economic stability.

Pakistan strongly condemned attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, including power plants, hospitals, and educational institutions, urging all sides to prioritize de-escalation and cease hostilities.

Highlighting diplomatic efforts, the ambassador noted that Pakistan has been actively engaged in promoting dialogue. He referred to recent consultations in Islamabad involving foreign ministers from Pakistan, Egypt, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia, aimed at reducing tensions and advancing peaceful solutions.

He further pointed to a joint five-point initiative announced by Pakistan and China, which includes an immediate ceasefire, inclusive peace talks, protection of civilians, restoration of maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and adherence to the UN Charter and international law.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the GCC.
