BEIJING: Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as a traditional partner of Russia in Asia, stressing the need to expand bilateral trade and cooperation across multiple sectors.
He made these remarks during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing, where both leaders expressed a shared commitment to advancing regional peace, prosperity, and development.
Prime Minister Sharif welcomed the growth in Pakistan-Russia ties, noting that bilateral trade recorded a marked increase last year, largely driven by Pakistan’s import of Russian oil. He said recent protocols signed between the two sides would further strengthen collaboration in agriculture, energy, iron and steel, and transport.
Expressing confidence in the upward trajectory of relations, the Prime Minister emphasized that both nations are making sincere efforts to broaden engagement, particularly in commerce and trade.
During the meeting, President Putin extended an invitation to Prime Minister Sharif to attend the SCO Heads of Government meeting in Moscow this November, which the Prime Minister graciously accepted.
The Russian leader also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the people of Pakistan over the devastation caused by recent floods.
