Pakistan Seeks Stronger Global Support to Safeguard Glaciers

BELEM (BRAZIL): Pakistan has called upon the international community to step up efforts to protect the rapidly melting glaciers of the Himalayan-Karakoram-Hindukush region.

Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik delivered the message in a video address at a side event during the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil.

He highlighted that the vast mountain range serves as a critical water source for millions across South Asia. Pakistan alone has around 13,000 glaciers that sustain the Indus River system and are essential for the country’s agriculture, economy, and ecosystems.

Dr. Malik warned that climate change is accelerating glacier melt, increasing risks such as glacial lake outburst floods.

He urged nations with a history of high emissions to support adaptation measures in vulnerable mountain regions and emphasized the need to prioritize cryosphere issues at COP30.
