ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has signed a United Nations treaty focused on the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The agreement was signed by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar during a ceremony at the UN Headquarters in New York.

According to a statement from the Foreign Office, Pakistan played a key role in shaping the treaty as Chair of the G77 group of developing countries. The country represented the collective interests of developing nations during the treaty negotiations.

The treaty, also known as the “High Seas Treaty,” aims to safeguard marine life in international waters, which cover nearly two-thirds of the world’s oceans.

The agreement sets out rules for the conservation of marine species, the sharing of marine genetic resources, and the fair use of ocean-based scientific research.

It also includes provisions for environmental impact assessments before activities like deep-sea mining or large-scale fishing can be undertaken in international waters.

Pakistan’s participation in the agreement highlights its commitment to global environmental protection, marine conservation, and multilateral cooperation.
