NEW YORK: Pakistan is set to take over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in July, with Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad scheduled to perform the responsibilities of the presidency for a month.
During a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar shared Pakistan’s framework and vision for the upcoming presidency. He emphasized that Pakistan would carry out its role in an open, transparent and consultative manner, reaffirming support for multilateral diplomacy, conflict prevention, and the Secretary-General’s peace efforts.
In his recent address to the Security Council, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar highlighted the dire situation of children in conflict zones, particularly in Gaza and Indian-occupied Kashmir. He condemned the alarming rise in violence against children in armed conflicts, pointing out that on May 6 and 7, 15 children were killed due to Indian aggression in Kashmir.
He called for a thorough investigation into India’s grave human rights violations.
Meanwhile, Second Secretary Rabia Ejaz responded to the Indian representative’s remarks at the UN, rejecting New Delhi’s distorted narrative and baseless accusations. She emphasized that India continues to ignore its shameful human rights record in occupied Kashmir while attempting to mislead the international community.
