Pakistani troops, police earned respect under UN mission: envoy

Munir Akram says Pakistan will continue to play its effective role in enhancing UN peacekeeping capability.

ISLAMABAD: Like its military, the Pakistan police have rendered invaluable services in maintaining peace in conflict zones of the world.

This was stated by Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram while speaking at a function held in Islamabad in connection with the UN Peace Day.

The ambassador told the gathering that Pakistan had deployed 230,000 troops overnight the years in 46 peacekeeping missions in different parts of the world.

He paid tribute to the police personnel from Pakistan who served the UN peacekeeping missions in different parts of the world and won accolades for their country as well as the UN.

The ambassador said that Pakistani police woman Shahzadi Gulfam was the first ever recipient of the International Female Police Keeper Award in 2011.

Ambassador Akram said that Pakistan will continue to play its effective role in enhancing the UN peacekeeping capability.

Speaking on the occasion, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix acknowledged the important role of Pakistan in global peace. He stressed on enhancing the capability of police to cope with the current challenges.
