UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan called for an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement to end the conflict in Ukraine, warning that continued escalation is deepening humanitarian suffering and undermining prospects for peace.

Addressing a UN Security Council briefing on the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the international community remains deeply troubled nearly four years after the conflict began, as relentless hostilities continue to cause widespread loss of life, destruction, and economic damage.

Ambassador Ahmad expressed alarm over the recent intensification of fighting and attacks by both sides, noting that such actions further worsen the humanitarian situation and erode trust needed for peace efforts. He stressed that the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure is a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law and must be fully respected by all parties.

He also expressed regret over reported damage to the Embassy of Qatar in Kyiv, emphasizing that the protection of diplomatic missions and the safety of their personnel is a legal obligation under international law.

Reiterating Pakistan’s long-standing position, the ambassador underscored that dialogue remains the only viable path to a lasting settlement. He said global opinion increasingly favors a peaceful resolution through sustained, meaningful, and structured negotiations.

Citing past diplomatic efforts, he referred to the Black Sea Grain Initiative of July 2022 and earlier talks in Istanbul as evidence that engagement can yield results. He also pointed to UN Security Council resolutions adopted in 2025 that underscored the importance of the pacific settlement of disputes.

Ambassador Ahmad said that a window for peace still exists and welcomed diplomatic initiatives by various countries, particularly efforts that prioritize dialogue. He urged all sides to demonstrate genuine political will, engage constructively, and begin with an immediate ceasefire.

He said that alleviating the suffering of millions must remain the top priority, calling for a just and lasting settlement in line with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant multilateral agreements, one that addresses the security interests of both Ukraine and Russia and ensures peace and stability in Europe.
