ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed serious concerns regarding India’s sudden changes in the flow of the Chenab River, describing it as entirely unacceptable and a clear violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andarabi stated that any unilateral measures related to river management are unacceptable and pose a significant threat to regional peace, stability and cooperation.

He called upon the international community to take immediate notice of India’s actions, which he said undermine established international agreements.

Andarabi added that unusual and significant fluctuations in the water levels of the Chenab River had been observed since December, and he expressed Pakistan’s strong reservations regarding India’s decision to release water without prior consultation or notification.

He underscored that the Indus Waters Treaty is legally binding under international law, and any abrupt or unilateral changes in the flow of rivers shared between the two countries are deeply concerning and have potential long-term consequences for the region.

In addition to the water-related concerns, the spokesperson condemned the disrespectful and offensive treatment of a Muslim female doctor by the Chief Minister of Bihar.

He also drew attention to the broader challenges and discriminatory practices faced by minorities in India, urging the Indian government to uphold and ensure the protection of minority rights, including the fundamental right to religious freedom.
