Pakistan Urges Safe Repatriation of Rohingya Muslims at UNGA

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for the safe, dignified and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar, stressing the urgent need for international action.

Speaking at a high-level conference at the United Nations on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said the community has endured decades of displacement and systematic denial of basic rights.

He noted that recent violent incidents in Myanmar’s Rakhine State have further aggravated the crisis, forcing thousands more to flee and deepening an already severe humanitarian emergency.

The Pakistani representative emphasized that the international community must translate its pledges of solidarity into practical steps—including ensuring accountability, safeguarding minority rights, and creating conditions for the safe return of Rohingya Muslims.

Observers note that over one million Rohingya remain in refugee camps in Bangladesh, living in overcrowded and fragile conditions.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that without sustained global pressure on Myanmar’s authorities, prospects for the community’s safe repatriation and long-term peace in the region will remain uncertain.
