Pakistan urges urgent, collective action to restore peace in Yemen

UNITED NATIONS: At a United Nations Security Council briefing on Yemen, Pakistan called for urgent, collective, and constructive efforts to restore peace in the country.

Delivering Pakistan’s national statement, Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized the need to reinvigorate inclusive political negotiations. He highlighted the importance of implementing coordinated measures to address Yemen’s interconnected political, humanitarian, and socio-economic challenges.

The crisis in Yemen began in 2014 when Houthi rebels seized the capital, Sana’a, forcing the internationally recognized government into exile. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to restore the government, leading to years of devastating conflict that have killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.

The war has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, with widespread famine, disease outbreaks, and the collapse of essential services. Despite periodic ceasefires and diplomatic efforts, a comprehensive political settlement remains elusive, leaving millions of Yemenis in urgent need of aid and protection.
