Pakistan warns against arbitrary use of universal jurisdiction principle

Envoy says this principle should only be used to enable International Court of Justice in resolving disputes.

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has said that the principle of universal jurisdiction should not be used by big powers as a license to violate international law that guarantee soveignity of nations.

It should rather be used to enable the  International Court of Justice in resolving disputes which are on the agenda of the Security Council.

The demand from Pakistan was raised at the general debate of the Sixth Committee on the scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction by Deputy Permanent Representative Usman Iqbal Jadoon.

Jadoon was of the opinion that the application of the principle should never be in violation of the international principles and the United Nations charter.

“Selective use and distortion of this principle by specific states not only diverges from the tenets of justice but also significantly compromises the integrity of international law,” he cautioned.

Iqbal also said that the universal jurisdiction should only apply to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, which have international repercussions.
