WASHINGTON: A U.S. court has sentenced Pakistani businessman Muhammad Asif Hafeez to 16 years in prison on charges related to international drug trafficking.

According to foreign media reports, Hafeez was found guilty on two counts of narcotics smuggling. He was originally arrested in London in August 2017 and was extradited to the United States approximately three years ago to face trial.

The court ruled that the time Hafeez has already spent in custody will be counted towards his sentence. Based on this calculation, his prison term is expected to end in 2033.

In addition to the prison sentence, the U.S. court has ordered the seizure of assets linked to his drug trafficking activities.

Muhammad Asif Hafeez, also known by the alias “Sultan,” was reportedly involved in operating a transnational drug trafficking network that spanned multiple countries.
