QUEENSLAND: In a historic moment in Queensland, Australia, Bisma Asif, the first Pakistani-origin member of the state parliament, stunned everyone by delivering her inaugural speech in Urdu.
According to international news agencies, as the parliamentary session commenced, Bisma Asif began her address with the traditional Urdu greeting “Assalamu Alaikum.” The members of the parliament listened attentively and welcomed her speech with applause.
In an emotional tone, Ms Asif said, “My identity is not just my own; my roots are in Pakistan, my language is Urdu, and I am proud of my Punjabi culture.”
She further emphasized that her election victory is not just an individual achievement but a representation of all immigrants living in Australia.
Born in Australia to parents originally from Lahore, Ms Asif won the Queensland state elections held in November 2024 and became a member of the state parliament.
