PALLEKELE: Pakistan’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup have become difficult but not impossible following a narrow two-wicket defeat to England in their Super 8 clash on Tuesday.

In a high-pressure match at Pallekele, England successfully chased down Pakistan’s target of 165 runs, reaching the target in 19.1 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

England’s captain, Harry Brook, played a match-winning knock, scoring an explosive 100 runs off 50 balls. His innings included 10 boundaries and 4 sixes, steering his team to victory.

Pakistan’s bowlers, however, showed resilience with Shaheen Shah Afridi leading the attack, taking 4 wickets for 30 runs in his 4 overs. Both Usman Tariq and Mohammad Nawaz claimed 2 wickets each.

With this win, England secured 4 points from 2 matches, topping the Group 2 standings. Pakistan and New Zealand each have 1 point, while Sri Lanka remains winless so far in the tournament.

Following the loss to England, Pakistan’s path to the semi-finals is now contingent on several key results. Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka in their final match to earn 2 crucial points. They also need New Zealand to lose to England, which would give Pakistan a better chance of qualifying. Additionally, Sri Lanka must secure a victory over England to improve Pakistan’s chances.

Pakistan’s net run rate (NRR) will also play an important role, as they will need to boost it to improve their standing if other results fall in their favor.
