PESHAWAR: Protests have erupted in Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram district, as residents demand the reopening of roads closed for two weeks.
The main Peshawar-Kurram and other roads have been shut down, causing severe difficulties for locals, including shortages of medicines, food and fuel.
According to Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud, the roads were closed due to security concerns after a convoy came under attack on October 12, resulting in 15 fatalities.
The prolonged closure has led to a significant humanitarian crisis with 10 people, including seven children, losing their lives due to lack of medical treatment and essential supplies.
Dr. Mir Hasan Jan, MS of Parachinar Hospital, confirmed that six children died due to lack of oxygen and inability to shift critical patients to Peshawar.
Tribal leaders, including Jalal Bangash and Haji Suleiman Khan, have demanded the opening of roads for Bishara, Muqbil, and Teri Mengal, and concrete steps for sustainable peace. MNA and parliamentary leader of MWM Engineer Hamid Hussain condemned the closure and suspension of 3G/4G services, urging the authorities to reopen and secure the roads .
Tribal leader and social activist Dr. Abdul Janan Orkazai’s statement emphasized the importance of unity and dialogue in achieving peace in Kurram. By setting aside political and other differences, people can work together towards a common goal of stability and prosperity.
Peace Jirga is currently negotiating with stakeholders to restore normalcy and ensure lasting peace in the region.
