PESHAWAR: Police in the capital of Khyber Pakthunkhwa province have expressed their inability to provide security to candidates taking part in the October 8 general elections.
The police said it would provide security to corner meetings and rallies but had no personnel to guard candidates individually.
The police announcement comes a day after the Counter Terrorism Department issued a list of political leaders and candidates facing threats of terror attacks in the province.
Moreover, a candidate affiliated with the PTI was shot dead by unknown people in Bajaur three days ago. Political gatherings have also come under attacks in Balochistan.
The KP police said that it gad shortage of manpower to ensure security for candidates in the elections.
Meanwhile, police in Islamabad have sought 500 personnel from Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan for deployment during the Feb 8 elections.
The federal capital police also said that it was short of personnel for deployment around polling stations and during public rallies as most of the police were deployed on VIP security duty.
It may be noted that terror attacks have increased in the provinces of Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan; however, the Election Commission of Pakistan after assessing the situation has announced that the polls would be held across the country at all costs on Feb 8.
