ISLAMABAD: The smuggling of petroleum oil products into Pakistan from Iran is costing the national kitty more than one billion dollars every year, according to a report.

The report said that in the past smuggling of petroleum products was confined mostly to the border areas of Balochistan abd KP. However, the smuggled oil is now available in the cities of Punjab such as Rawalpindi and Lahore and Peshawar in KP. This show the network involved in smuggling of POL has connections in departments that are supposed to check such illegal activity.

According to the report, 10 million litres of smuggled oil reaches Pakistani. This oil accounts for 20pc of the POL in the country.

It is very strange to note that despite open smuggling of petroleum products mostly in Balochistan, no action is being taking against those behind this illegal activity which is causing huge losses to the country.

In a letter, the Oil Companies Advisory Council requested the authorities in Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to play its role in checking the smuggling into the country of the petroleum oil products.
