PHC Stays Appointment of New Opposition Leaders in Senate, NA

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has issued an order restraining the appointment of new opposition leaders in both the Senate and the National Assembly.

A two-member bench, comprising Justice Arshad Ali and Justice Khurshid Iqbal, heard a petition challenging the Election Commission’s decision to de-notify PTI leaders Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz.

The court directed the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate to halt the appointment of any new opposition leader in the respective houses until further notice.

Additionally, the court barred the Election Commission from taking any further action against Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz and postponed the hearing until August 15.

This development comes after an anti-terrorism court sentenced Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz in May 9 cases, leading to their disqualification from parliament.

Following the Election Commission’s decision to disqualify nine PTI members, including Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, the party has lost its position as the official opposition in both houses of parliament.
