ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has resumed its flight operations to the United Kingdom after a gap of five years.
The inaugural ceremony is being held today at Islamabad International Airport and Manchester Airport to mark the occasion.
The first PIA flight from Islamabad took off for Manchester carrying passengers, officially reopening the national carrier’s route to the UK.
The ceremony at Islamabad Airport is being attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, ambassadors from the European Union and the United Kingdom, and senior government officials.
According to a PIA spokesperson, the airline has witnessed an overwhelming response from passengers following the announcement of flight operations.
More than 12,500 passengers have already booked their tickets in advance for the next three months. In light of this strong demand, the airline plans to expand its UK operations further in the future.
In the first phase, PIA will operate two weekly flights from Islamabad to Manchester. In the second phase, flights from Lahore and Karachi will also be launched. The flights will be operated using Boeing 777 aircraft, each carrying approximately 350 passengers.
Special cake-cutting ceremonies are being held at Islamabad Airport, on board the flight, and at Manchester Airport to celebrate the occasion. Additionally, passengers on the inaugural flight will be entered into a lucky draw, with prizes including mobile phones and a 1300cc car.
