ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep appreciation for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ leadership and diplomatic efforts during a telephonic conversation held on Wednesday, amid heightened tensions in South Asia.
The Prime Minister lauded the Secretary-General’s continued engagement and preventive diplomacy, which he said reflected a firm commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and to the cause of regional peace. The two leaders have now spoken three times over the past two weeks.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that Pakistan agreed to the recent ceasefire understanding in the greater interest of peace in the region. He reaffirmed the country’s determination to pursue peace while defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs.
He strongly condemned what he described as India’s unprovoked aggression based on false claims of terrorism, warning that such actions set a dangerous precedent. The Prime Minister also voiced concern over provocative statements from Indian leaders, calling them a serious threat to fragile regional peace.
Underscoring the importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, PM Shehbaz urged the UN to play its due role in facilitating a just solution in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Secretary-General Guterres welcomed the ceasefire understanding and expressed sorrow over the loss of civilian lives. He reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing engagement with both Pakistan and India, stating that working for global peace remains a fundamental duty of the United Nations.
