LAHORE: Throngs of PML-N leaders, workers and supporters were heading towards Lahore from different parts of the country to welcome party’s supreme leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif who is expected to return to Pakistan after about four years.
Mr Sharif is scheduled to address a public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore and announce his future political plan amid speculations that his return from the UK was a result of an understanding with the establishment before the general elections expected to be held in January next year.
The speculations of a deal with the establishment gained weight when court in Islamabad suspended arrest warrants of the three-time former prime minister in three corruption cases a day earlier.
After Panama Papers scandal in 2018, Mr Sharif was imprisoned in Pakistan. However, months later local courts allowed him to leave the country for medical treatment abroad.
According to media reports, the PML-N has chartered a special plane that will carry Nawaz Sharif along with a number of key party leaders from Dubai. The flight FZ4525 is scheduled to depart from Terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport at 9am.
According to party sources, the plane will first land at Islamabad and then fly to Lahore where thousands of party workers and leaders will receive Mr Sharif at the venue of the public gathering.
Mr Sharif will leave the airport in a helicopter and land near the Lahore Fort from where he would be taken to the Minar-e-Pakistan ground in the procession of vehicles. He is expected to address the public gathering late on Saturday evening.
The PML-N on Friday said all arrangements had been finalized at Minar-e-Pakistan ground and 40,000 chairs had been arranged at the venue which spreads over 130,686 square feet area. Party leaders Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Sharif inspected the arrangements and directed the organizers to further improve the facilities.
