ISLAMABAD: Leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) held a joint press conference in Islamabad, announcing their decision to contest the upcoming by-elections together.
PPP leader Raja Pervez Ashraf stated that both parties have agreed to participate jointly in the by-elections based on a mutually agreed formula. He warmly welcomed the PML-N delegation and said that all matters were finalized amicably.
Ashraf explained that in constituencies where a candidate from either party was the runner-up in the previous election, the candidate from that same party will contest the by-election. The meeting was held under the directives of their respective party leaderships. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for helping settle the election framework.
PML-N leader and Federal Minister for Railways, Hanif Abbasi, emphasized the alliance, saying, “We are steadfast allies, and our leaderships make prudent and unified decisions.” He added that the public should be well aware of the cooperation between the two parties.
This alliance marks a significant development in Pakistan’s political landscape, as the two major opposition parties have historically been rivals. Their decision to join forces in the by-elections signals a strategic move to consolidate opposition votes and present a united front against other political contenders, potentially reshaping future electoral dynamics.
