LAHORE: Punjab Police have been placed on high alert, with over 83,000 officers and personnel deployed across the province as the government feared protests against US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran after Friday prayers.
The move comes about following violent protests across the country a few days ago during which scores of people were killed in clashes with security forces and police in Karachi, Islamabad and Skardu.
Inspector General of Punjab, Abdul Kareem, issued instructions from the provincial capital, Lahore, directing the police to maintain strict vigilance over potential terrorist or disruptive elements and monitor suspicious individuals.
Security has been increased at mosques, police stations, consulates, and other sensitive locations, and continuous monitoring of worship places and key sites via CCTV cameras has been ensured.
Police personnel at inter-provincial checkpoints have also been instructed to remain highly alert. These measures are part of the provincial government’s efforts to ensure public safety and maintain peace during the holy month of Ramadan.
Police in the federal capital have also been put on high alert and most of the roads leading to the Red Zone in Islamabad have been blocked.
