BRUSSELS: Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has said that political reconciliation in Pakistan is only possible when apologies are offered with a sincere heart.
Speaking to senior journalist Suhail Waraich at an event organized by overseas Pakistanis in Brussels, he likened the act of seeking forgiveness to the story of Adam and Iblis in the Quran, noting that those who apologized were like angels, while those who did not were akin to Satan.
Addressing rumors about potential political changes, he dismissed them as baseless, saying they were spread by parties opposing both the government and the establishment. He reaffirmed that God had appointed him as the protector of Pakistan and that he harbored no personal ambitions for any position.
On foreign policy, Field Marshal Munir highlighted Pakistan’s long-standing experience in maintaining a balance between China and the United States.
“We will not sacrifice one friend for the sake of another,” he said. He also praised former U.S. President Donald Trump’s genuine desire for peace, noting that Pakistan’s support for his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize has gained international attention.
The Army Chief issued a warning to India against using proxies to disrupt peace in Pakistan. He also urged the Afghan government to stop pushing the Taliban into Pakistan, asserting that avenging the blood of every Pakistani is a duty.
Commenting on the efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he lauded his dedication, noting the PM’s 18-hour workdays and the cabinet’s commitment during wartime.
During the Brussels event, Field Marshal Munir was welcomed as a hero by overseas Pakistanis. He spent several hours meeting attendees and personally greeting each individual, saying, “How can we break the hearts of people who have come from far away?”
