ISLAMABAD: A strong western weather system has entered Pakistan and is expected to bring widespread rain and snowfall across several parts of the country, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The PMD stated that the system will affect upper regions of the country from this evening through January 24, while Punjab, Balochistan, and Sindh are also likely to experience its impact.
Under the influence of this system, heavy rain and snowfall are expected in upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir. There is a risk of flash flooding in Swat, Chitral, Buner, Shangla, Dir, Malakand, Bajaur, and Mardan. In response, the Federal Flood Commission has issued alerts for Swabi, Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Battagram.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued an alert, warning of possible flooding in the Kabul River and its tributaries due to intense rainfall. Flooding risks have also been highlighted for Swat, Chitral, Dir, Buner, and Shangla districts.
The NDMA has advised provincial and district administrations to remain on high alert and closely monitor vulnerable locations.
In Balochistan, rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, along with snowfall in higher areas, is expected in districts including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, and Noshki.
Rain and snowfall are also forecast for Murree, the Galiyat region, and surrounding areas from this evening.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Karachi, coastal areas of Sindh, and southern parts of the province on January 22 and 23.
