LAHORE: After two decades, preparations for the Basant festival have been completed. The sale of kite strings and kites will officially begin tonight marking the start of festivities.
Shopkeepers have shared the expected prices. A single “tava gadha” (kite spool) will cost between Rs. 300–350. A one-and-a-half spool will range from Rs. 400–450, while two-piece kite strings could sell for Rs. 5,000–9,000.
Vendors also stated that all kite strings and kites must have a QR code for sale, in line with safety and regulatory measures.
Preparations include ensuring safety for buildings and participants, with joint teams being formed to supervise the celebrations.
The Basant festival, celebrated with colorful kites, is a major cultural event, especially in Lahore and other parts of Punjab, marking the arrival of spring.
The Punjab government has allowed Basant in Lahore with specific conditions and on specific days while sale and flying kites is still banned in other cities.
