Preserving, promoting Urdu vital for national identity: Consul General

NEW YORK: Preserving and promoting the Urdu language is essential for maintaining the collective identity and cultural values of the Pakistani diaspora, said Mr. Aamer Ahmed Atozai, Consul General of Pakistan in New York, at a special literary event held in New Jersey.
Speaking at “Urdu Adab aur Chai”, a gathering organized by the Brilliance Foundation of New Jersey to honor renowned Urdu poetess Humaira Rahman, Mr. Atozai highlighted the importance of Urdu as a unifying language for Pakistanis around the world.
“Urdu is not just a means of communication – it is a bridge that connects our diverse communities and serves as a repository of our literary, cultural, and historical heritage,” he said.
Mr. Atozai praised the Brilliance Foundation for its dedication to cultural preservation and its efforts to promote Urdu literature in the United States. He also suggested the introduction of Urdu language classes at community centers to help young Pakistani Americans stay connected to their roots and develop pride in their heritage.
The event drew members of the Pakistani-American community, literature enthusiasts, and cultural advocates. It reflected a growing interest in nurturing linguistic and cultural traditions among the diaspora.
Organizers expressed gratitude for the Consul General’s presence and support, reaffirming their commitment to promoting Urdu language and literature as a key part of preserving Pakistan’s cultural legacy abroad.
Promotion of art & culture
Moreover, to promote Pakistani art and culture internationally, the Consul General of Pakistan Aamer Ahmed Atozai held a meeting with Qudsia Rahim, Executive Director of the Lahore Biennale Foundation (LBF), to explore collaborative initiatives in visual arts and cultural diplomacy.During the meeting, Ms. Rahim briefed the Consul General on LBF’s ongoing global efforts, particularly a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of California, Berkeley. The proposed partnership will focus on academic and creative exchanges, including artist residencies, joint programming, and public talks.
The two sides also discussed prospects for future collaboration between the Consulate and LBF to bring Pakistani art and cultural heritage to the forefront in the United States. Emphasis was placed on curating meaningful events that highlight Pakistan’s artistic diversity and uplift emerging voices from the country’s creative community.
Mr. Atozai reiterated the consulate’s commitment to supporting such cultural initiatives, noting their importance in strengthening people-to-people ties and enhancing Pakistan’s image abroad through soft diplomacy.
The meeting marks a step forward in fostering greater international appreciation for Pakistan’s vibrant art scene and deep-rooted cultural legacy.
