ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have called on the nation to uphold the values of patience, sacrifice, justice and unity as Pakistan observes Ashura (10th Muharram 1448 AH).
In his message, President Zardari said Ashura is one of the most significant days in Islamic history, reminding Muslims of the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family and companions in the Battle of Karbala.
He said the tragedy of Karbala is not merely a historical event but an enduring lesson in standing for truth, justice, integrity and human dignity against oppression and injustice.
The president urged the nation to adopt the principles of righteousness, moral courage, patience, selflessness and public service in both individual and collective life. He also appealed to citizens to promote peace, sectarian harmony and mutual respect during Muharram, avoid rumours and provocative behaviour, and contribute to strengthening national unity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his separate message, described Ashura as a day that teaches humanity faith, perseverance, sacrifice, justice and social reform.
He said the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his devoted companions remains a timeless symbol of resistance against tyranny and unwavering commitment to truth.
The prime minister said the events of Karbala underscore the importance of upholding principles, justice and human dignity, adding that a strong and civilized society is built on adherence to values rather than submission to oppression.
He urged scholars, religious leaders, media and the youth to highlight the true message of Ashura, foster inter-sect harmony, reject hatred and extremism, and work towards a peaceful and united Pakistan.
Both leaders prayed for peace, stability and unity in Pakistan and across the Muslim world, urging the nation to draw inspiration from the teachings and sacrifices of Imam Hussain (RA).
