Pakistani Envoy, British MPs Discuss AJK Elections

LONDON: Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr Tipu Usman, held separate meetings with British parliamentarians of Kashmiri origin, including Lord Qurban Hussain, MP Yasmin Qureshi and MP Mohammad Yasin.

The discussions focused on Pakistan-UK bilateral relations, the Kashmiri community in Britain, and the latest situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The participants also exchanged views on the upcoming AJK elections scheduled for July 27.

Speaking to the media after the meetings, Lord Qurban Hussain said the discussions were introductory in nature and covered developments in the UK, Pakistan and AJK. He said all sides agreed that issues should be resolved through peaceful means.

He expressed hope that the situation in AJK would improve soon and said the people would elect a government of their choice in the upcoming elections. He added that dialogue remained the only viable path to resolving outstanding issues.

MP Yasmin Qureshi also stressed the need for all stakeholders to engage in dialogue, saying a peaceful resolution of the situation would be in everyone’s interest.
