ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has returned the Madressa Registration Bill with objections, according to media reports.
After the refusal by the president to sign the bill into a law, the government is contemplating convening joint session of parliament to pass the bill as JUI-F chief’s pressure mounts.
A few days ago, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman met PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and expressed his serious concerns over the president’s refusal to sign the bill.
Maulana Fazal had earlier said that the government was deliberately not signing the bill after its passage by parliament. He said that if the bill was not passed by December 7, the JUI and other religions parties would decide about their future course of action.
Under the law, if the president returns a bill with objections, parliament can remove the objections through consultation and vetting. The parliament can also pass the bill in a joint session after which it will become a law.
