WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has been formally nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, according to American media reports.
The nomination was submitted by Republican Congressman Buddy Carter from Georgia, who praised Trump’s role in brokering peace between Israel and Iran.
In his letter to the Nobel Committee, Carter stated that Trump played a “historic and extraordinary role” in preventing the escalation of armed conflict between the two nations and in halting Iran’s access to deadly weapons. He emphasized Trump’s leadership in addressing what he described as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
This is not the first international endorsement for Trump’s candidacy. The government of Pakistan earlier also submitted a recommendation to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, citing Trump’s diplomatic intervention that helped prevent war between Pakistan and India.
According to Pakistani officials, the decision to support Trump’s Nobel nomination was based on his crucial role during the recent Pakistan-India crisis.
Trump himself has commented on his potential for receiving the award, stating, “I should get the Nobel Prize for stopping the Pakistan-India war, but the Nobel always goes to liberals, they won’t give it to me.”
Notably, on May 10, amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India, Trump had announced on his social media platform Truth Social that both countries had agreed to a ceasefire. More recently, he also publicly announced the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, further strengthening his case for the Peace Prize.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in October next year.
