ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has said the government is set to accelerate its privatization agenda following progress in the sale of Pakistan International Airlines.

Speaking during a television program, the minister stated that the privatization process of Pakistan International Airlines is moving forward, and several other state-owned enterprises are also included in the government’s broader reform strategy.

He said that electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), the Islamabad Airport, and assets in the banking and insurance sectors are expected to undergo continued restructuring and increased private sector participation.

Muhammad Aurangzeb emphasized that the government’s economic vision focuses on shifting the role of the state from direct business operations to regulation and oversight, while encouraging private sector-led growth through public-private partnerships.

Referring to regional developments, he said changing geopolitical conditions in the Middle East could create new economic opportunities for Pakistan, particularly in trade and investment flows. He added that potential improvements in regional integration and easing of restrictions could support economic activity.

He further noted increased international commercial interest in Pakistan’s ports, especially Port Qasim and Gwadar, and stressed that the key challenge will be sustaining gains in remittances, foreign exchange inflows, and trade over the long term.
