BUCHAREST: In the second round of Romania’s presidential election, pro-European Union candidate Nicușor Dan emerged victorious, according to international media reports.
Nicușor Dan, the liberal candidate and former mayor of Bucharest, secured the presidency with broad support from pro-European voters.
His rival, George Simion, a nationalist candidate reportedly backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, was defeated in the runoff.
Initially, Simion rejected the election results, citing alleged irregularities. However, he later conceded defeat and congratulated Nicușor Dan on his victory.
The election outcome is seen as a significant step for Romania’s continued integration with the European Union and a rejection of nationalist populism.
