FLORENCE: Large demonstrations in support of Palestine were held outside the Italian national football team’s training center in Florence, where protesters demanded the cancellation of the upcoming World Cup qualifier match against Israel.
The crucial fixture between Italy and Israel, scheduled for October 14 in Udine, has drawn significant controversy as the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) considers suspending Israel due to its ongoing military operations in Gaza.
Protesters gathered outside the football complex carrying banners that read, “Let’s stop Zionism through resistance,” while chanting slogans such as, “How can you still allow a Zionist and criminal state like Israel to play?” The demonstration highlighted widespread anger over Israel’s actions and the perceived silence of international sports bodies.
Tensions escalated further after the Israeli navy intercepted the “Global Sumud Flotilla” and detained activists earlier this week. The incident triggered a new wave of pro-Palestine rallies across multiple Italian cities, intensifying calls for political and sporting institutions to take a firm stance.
In response to the growing unrest, Italy’s largest labor unions called for a nationwide general strike, resulting in the cancellation or delay of hundreds of trains and several flights, while many educational institutions were forced to shut down.
The protests also follow an earlier move in August, when the Italian Football Coaches Association (AIAC) publicly urged UEFA to suspend Israel from international competitions, arguing that allowing the Israeli team to participate undermines the principles of fair play and human rights.
This wave of coordinated demonstrations reflects a sharp rise in public pressure on Italian authorities and European football officials to reconsider sporting relations with Israel amid the escalating conflict in Gaza.
