WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that progress is being made in indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran through Pakistani diplomats, expressing hope that a deal could be reached soon.
In an interview with the British newspaper Financial Times, Trump stated that both direct and indirect talks with Iran are ongoing and showing positive developments.
He also made controversial remarks suggesting that the United States could take control of Iranian oil resources and even seize Kharg Island, a key Iranian oil facility.
According to Trump, Iran has recently allowed several Pakistan-flagged vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, increasing the number of transiting ships to 20. He claimed that the permission was granted by Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Trump reiterated that negotiations with Iran are progressing well and expressed optimism about an early agreement.
Meanwhile, a US media report claimed that hundreds of American special operations forces have been deployed to the Middle East amid rising regional tensions.
