WASHINGTON: Significant progress has been reported in talks over a possible ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with discussions underway for a 45-day truce, according to US media.

Reports suggest that negotiations involving the US, Iran and a group of regional mediators are ongoing to de-escalate tensions in the region.

The proposed plan is said to be divided into two phases. In the first phase, a temporary 45-day ceasefire would be implemented, during which both sides would continue negotiations aimed at reaching a permanent end to the conflict.

Sources say confidence-building measures are also under consideration during this period to help reduce hostilities.

In the second phase, efforts would focus on finalizing a comprehensive agreement to bring the conflict to a complete end. The temporary ceasefire could be extended if more time is required for negotiations.

However, sources indicate that reaching any major or final agreement within the next 48 hours appears unlikely, though the initiative is being viewed as a crucial opportunity to prevent further escalation.

Meanwhile, the White House and the US State Department have not yet issued any official response to the reports, leaving the situation uncertain.
