KARACHI: Protesters belonging to the Shia community continued blocking roads at 12 points in different parts of Karachi against the prolonged law and order situation in Kurram tribal district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa following the tribal clashes left over 100 people dead there.
The two tribes in Kurram belong to the Shia and Ahle Sunnat schools of thought and they have been killing each other for decades.
The KP government has failed to resolve the issue and reopen roads to Kurram for months leading yo shortage of essential food items and medicines. Local people have said that over 100 children have died in Kurram due to shortage of medicines.
The protesters have taken to the streets in Karachi against blockades of roads and the government inability to resolve the issue.
The Shia community has staged protest sit-in at Numaush Chowrangi on the main MA Jinnah Road, creating gridlocks in the whole area. Moreover, Dharnas have been staged at Natha Khan, Malir 15, Sharae Faisal, Ancholi, Nazimabad No 1 and Kamran Chowrangi.
On the other hand, the Khyber Pakthunkhwa government said that a Jirga formed by the government had finalized an agreement to restore peace in Kurram and the two tribes would soon sign on it.
