ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has rejected the government’s objections to its nomination of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the opposition leader in the National Assembly.
The government raised concerns about the choice, but PTI chief whip Amir Dogar has firmly reiterated that Achakzai’s name remains final for the position.
Amir Dogar stated that the PTI leadership, after consulting with the party’s founding members, had decided on Achakzai’s candidacy and would not entertain further discussions on the matter. “The name of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as our nominee for Opposition Leader is final, and there will be no change,” Dogar emphasized.
Highlighting the delay in filling the opposition leader’s position, which has been vacant for over two months, Dogar pointed out that during this period, critical legislative measures, including the 27th Constitutional Amendment, were passed. He further asserted that as a duly elected member of the National Assembly, Achakzai has the constitutional right to hold the position of Opposition Leader.
“There is no valid legal or constitutional reason to object to his nomination. This is our constitutional right, and the government should not delay the process any further,” Dogar said. He added that PTI would formally respond to the government’s letter in due course, with the matter expected to be addressed by the National Assembly Secretariat soon.
