LAHORE: The Punjab government has issued a smog advisory as air quality continues to deteriorate in several parts of the province.
According to the Smog Monitoring and Early Warning System, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 123 around 9 a.m., placing it in the moderate category. Officials said traffic congestion during peak hours contributed to a slight rise in pollution levels
The Environment Department noted that cooler morning temperatures and emissions from vehicles and industrial units cause pollutants to settle near the ground, worsening the smog conditions.
Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with the government’s “Clean and Green Punjab” campaign. Under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a coordinated plan is being implemented to control air pollution.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during rush hours, ensure regular vehicle maintenance, and wear protective masks to minimize exposure.
The advisory further recommended that drivers switch off engines at long traffic signals to save fuel and reduce emissions. Motorcyclists were urged to use environmental safety masks, while schools and offices were asked to slightly adjust timings to ease traffic congestion.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said that the traffic police and district administrations have been directed to strengthen monitoring and enforcement on major roads across Punjab.
