LAHORE: The Punjab government has introduced a new system across the province under which motorcycles and vehicles will now be registered and transferred on the owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) instead of the chassis number.
According to Excise officials, citizens will also have the option to retain their vehicle number and use it on a new vehicle. Those opting for a new number instead will pay a nominal fee. The move aims to improve security by linking all vehicle records directly to the CNIC of the owner.
Excise officials explained that when purchasing a used vehicle, a new number will be issued for a small fee. For motorcycles, an additional Rs.1,000 will be charged, while for cars, the fee will range from Rs.1,000 to Rs.6,000 depending on engine capacity.
Excise and Taxation Director General Umar Sher Chatha stated that under the new system, citizens can retain a number for up to two years without purchasing a new vehicle. After the validity expires, the number will be cancelled.
Authorities believe this system will also help citizens save significant amounts, as they can use their preferred numbers on new vehicles instead of paying hefty sums for fresh registration plates.
