Punjab teachers end strike on Maryam’s assurance

Strike against changes to leave encashment and pension rules had badly affected academic activities.

LAHORE: Government schoolteachers have announced their strike and protest against changes to leave encashment and pension rules and proposed privatization of educational institutions.

The announcement to call off the strike was made by the office-bearers of the teachers association after they met PML-N chief organizer Maryam Nawaz in Lahore.

The teachers briefed Ms Maryam about their grievances and requested her to play her role in getting the issues resolved.

The PML-N leader assured the teachers of resolving the issue and said the strike should be called of as it was badly affecting students furure.

The strike started about two weeks ago against the provincial government’s decision to change pension rules and hand over some schools to the private sector.

The reachers have in many cities started closing schools forcing students to go back home without taking classes.

On Saturday, Punjab caretaker chief minister Mohsin Naqvi said there was no plan to privatize schools in the province.

Earlier, the provincial government had asked police to take action against the teachers but the protesters said they would continue their strike till acceptance of their demands.
