Punjab teachers’ strike puts academic activities out of gear

Strike against pension rules changes and privatization of schools started a week back.

LAHORE: A strike by government schoolteachers across Punjab has continued for over a week, putting academic activities in the educational institutions across the province out of gear.

The strike started against the provincial government’s decision to change pension rules and hand over some schools to the private sector.

Against the pension rules changes, employees of other government departments gave also gone on strike and stopped working.

The reachers have in many cities started closing schools forcing students to go back home without taking classes. 

The provincial government asked police to take action against the teachers but the protesters said they would continue their strike till acceptance of their demands.

On the other hand, a senior officer in the Punjab education department said talks were underway to resolve the issues of the teachers and restore educational activities in the institutions.

However, he said that action would be taken against all those involved in forcibly closing schools in the province.
