LAHORE: Transporters across Punjab, including the provincial capital Lahore, have begun a wheel-jam strike today in protest against what they describe as excessively heavy fines.
Following the announcement, several major bus terminals in Lahore remain closed, including the Shera Kot and Bund Road stations and their booking offices, leaving a large number of passengers distressed and unable to travel.
A few transport terminals are partially operational, but the disruption has already slowed the movement of essential goods. Market representatives fear that interruptions in supply could increase pressure on trading centres if the situation continues beyond today.
Commuters in different cities are facing hardship due to unavailability of buses. Despite request by district administrations associations of transporters refused to call off the strike demanding that the Punjab government should withdraw the changes to the traffic law.
According to representatives of the transporters, the government should ensure them relief from what the unfair penalties and ongoing legal cases.
They have warned that the wheel-jam strike will remain in place until the recently introduced traffic ordinance is fully withdrawn.
