Putin, Modi Agree to Expand Trade and Cooperation

NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to expand and deepen trade relations between their two countries, aiming to strengthen their long-standing friendship.

The leaders discussed broadening their economic cooperation, focusing on energy, defense, technology, and infrastructure.

Both countries have long-standing ties in the energy sector, with Russia being a significant supplier of oil and natural gas to India. They have expressed a desire to enhance this cooperation further, especially in light of global energy price fluctuations and supply chain challenges.

Defense cooperation is another key aspect of their relationship. Russia has been a major supplier of military equipment to India, and the two leaders emphasized the importance of continuing joint training, intelligence sharing, and technology transfer.

In addition to trade and defense, the leaders also agreed to strengthen their broader strategic partnership, with a focus on global geopolitics and regional security, particularly in response to shifting power dynamics in Asia. They also discussed enhancing cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties, which have been a significant part of the India-Russia relationship for decades.

This new agreement comes as both countries face complex global challenges, India navigating its position in the Indo-Pacific and Russia dealing with international sanctions related to its actions in Ukraine. The move highlights their efforts to strengthen bilateral ties at a time of shifting global power.–Reuters
