KARACHI: A powerful windstorm accompanied by heavy rain struck Karachi, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life across the city.
According to reports, at least 20 people were killed and more than 60 injured in various weather-related incidents.
Strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 97 km/h in some areas, caused trees to fall, billboards to collapse, and buildings to sustain severe damage.
Major neighborhoods including North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Clifton, and Saddar were heavily affected. Power outages were also reported in multiple parts of the city.
The deadliest incident occurred in the Baldia area, where a wall collapse in Moach Goth claimed 13 lives. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and continued search operations amid fears that more people could be trapped under the debris.
Local authorities, including officials from Sindh’s provincial government, took immediate notice of the situation. Emergency services were deployed, and rescue operations are ongoing to assist victims and clear affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that more rain and thunderstorms may occur later in the day, with chances of hailstorms in some areas. Further rain spells are also expected between March 24 and 27.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather conditions.
