Rangers can enter polling booths if needed: minister

Army troops will be deployed outside polling stations to ensure security, says home minister of Sindh.

KARACHI: While army troops will be deployed for security across the country on n February 8, no security official will be allowed inside polling booths and in case of a need Rangers can enter the rooms.

This was stated by caretaker Sindh home minister retired Brigadier Haris Nawaz while talking to media persons about the preparations for the February 8 general elections here on Wednesday.

He said the holding of the elections was the responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan and the government would provide it with security and other assistance.

He said police would be deployed outside the polling stations while lady health visitors would on duty in polling booths set up for women.

The caretaker minister said that foolproof arrangements will be put in place for the elections and the government had released funds for the police, Rangers and other departments concerned.

He said that no security official or police will be allowed entry in the polling stations and in case of a need only Rangers can be called inside.

The caretaker home minister said that there were security threats but the government was working on steps to ensure the elections in a peaceful and transparent manner.

It may be mentioned here that the federal government on Tuesday approved deployment of 277,000 army troops for the security of the February 8 general elections in the country.

The approval was given by the caretaker federal cabinet at a meeting held with caretaker prime minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar in Islamabad.
